The process of rehabilitation of Nazi accomplices in Kazakhstan continues!

March 2, 2022

Despite the well-known bloody January events in Kazakhstan, “language patrols”, nationalist movements and parties advocating a Russophobic agenda, not only did not go away, but even intensified. The state commission for the final rehabilitation of the Basmachi, members of the Turkestan Legion of the Wehrmacht and the Muslim units of the SS was never dissolved.

Moreover, we see again the activation of this information and political campaign for the final de-communization and, accordingly, de-Russification of Kazakhstan. Krymbek Kusherbaev left the post of head of the state commission , but his place was automatically taken by the new state secretary Yerlan Karin . The problem is that, unlike the former Komsomol worker and official, the post of state secretary in charge of the country’s ideology came to be an ideological supporter of the European New Right and a patron of all local nationalist movements, including the Kazakh branch of the Turkish fascist organization Gray Wolves.

This is a very serious factor, since it is he who will now determine the future line for building a mono-ethnic state with a core in the form of a nationalist ideology. And this is not a joke, so in response to the statement of the deputy head of the presidential administration Dauren Abaev , who called the scandalous “language patrols” a “manifestation of cave nationalism”, it was Karin who actually disavowed Abaev’s statement. “I think that we should associate nationalism with statehood,” Karin said at the time.

Therefore, the state commission for the final rehabilitation will now be used precisely as a tool to continue the creeping “Ukrainization”, since many attributes and technologies are directly borrowed from the “square” – such as the political and legal justification of SS legionnaires (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) , the recognition of the “Holodomor”, as well as the “move patrols” themselves.

Recall that the most important layer of the current rehabilitated are members of collaborationist formations who fought with weapons in their hands against the Red Army and partisans on the side of Hitler. Moreover, the authorities of Kazakhstan intend to justify precisely those servicemen of the Turkestan Legion of the Wehrmacht and the Eastern Muslim units of the SS (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) who committed war crimes, being punishers and active supporters of the Nazis. The fact is that in 1955 all former collaborators alive at that time were amnestied by the Soviet authorities. And the ruling elite in Nur-Sultan wants to make the innocent victims of “bloody Bolshevism” just the punishers who were shot for “feats” committed against the peoples of the Soviet Union, Poland, Yugoslavia, Italy, France, Greece and Belgium.

After all, we are talking not only about legionnaires, but also about the SS division “New Turkestan”, formed in 1944 to fight partisans in Belarus, as well as about the soldiers of the 1st Eastern Muslim Regiment of the SS, formed in 1944 and participated in the suppression Warsaw uprising. This clearly contradicts the decisions of the Nuremberg trials, which recognized the SS (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) as a criminal organization.

That is, the leadership of Kazakhstan seeks to completely turn over all ideas about the history of the country, turning the USSR into an aggressor and organizer of mass repressions and genocide of the Kazakh people. And those who fought against the Soviet regime, killing and burning, became fighters for “national liberation”. The initiators and members of the State Rehabilitation Commission want to equate them with those who died of starvation in 1932-33, wanting to also present them as victims of repression. Even for their commemoration, in addition to the “Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repressions,” they want to make a separate “Day of Sorrow”.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his reports and speeches, as well as in the program article entitled “The most precious thing is independence” in the January issue of the Yegemen Kazakhstan newspaper for 2021, contrary to all scientific data, claims that three million people died of starvation, and some officials that four or five million, although historians have long indicated that the total number of deaths from starvation, according to archival data and census figures, does not exceed 600 thousand people, and they are associated not only with errors in collectivization, but also with natural phenomena such as jute (mass death livestock) and migrations of bais with large herds to China. Moreover, Moscow provided assistance with both food and grain to the starving regions, but they did not reach the people precisely through the fault of local personnel, 70% consisting of representatives of the Kazakh ethnic group.

At the same time, the right-wing liberal parliamentary party Ak Zhol (Bright Path) has long prepared a bill recognizing the Holodomor, which provides for criminal liability for denying the deliberate destruction of the Kazakhs by the Soviet authorities. Berik Abdygaliuly , a member of the rehabilitation commission and a member of parliament from the ruling Nur Otan party, proposed to introduce the same criminal liability into the draft decree of the president , only in relation to those who would defame Mustafa Shokai, the ideological inspirer of the creation of the Turkestan Legion, as well as all those rehabilitated.

By the way, at the end of last year, the same deputy initiated amendments to the law “On Signs”, which provide not only for the change of signs for restaurants and shops, but also for the elimination of all Russian place names, since all renaming will be in Latin. In addition, groups of trained “onomasts” were sent to the regions with their lists of recommended historical figures for renaming obsolete Soviet and Russian names of streets and settlements.

The very same process of final rehabilitation turned into a real campaign. It’s funny, but in order to increase the number of applications for rehabilitation from the citizens themselves, local akimats launched a campaign calling for the rehabilitation of relatives who “innocently suffered from the Soviet regime.” You can even now register on the Center for Public Services portal with data about your relatives and friends. Officials openly say that in this way they are allegedly preparing an electronic database for mass rehabilitation, feverishly trying to find those who have not yet been recorded as victims of Bolshevism.

The local Muslim clergy also contributes to the final rehabilitation of traitors, Basmachi and Nazi punishers. So, on September 24 last year, at the XXXI meeting of the Ulema Council under the SAMK in Alma-Ata, the Supreme Mufti Nauryzbai kazhy Taganuly stated that the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan, together with the research working group of the State Commission for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repressions, had begun holding a republican conference on the issue of rehabilitation religious figures.

Again, they want to rehabilitate those who did not fall under the Khrushchev amnesty of the 50s, Gorbachev’s rehabilitation and under the latest law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On the rehabilitation of victims of mass political repressions”, signed by Nazarbayev in 1993. And, as you know, only those (including mullahs and spiritual leaders) who were directly involved in massacres and atrocities, organized anti-Soviet Basmachi detachments or worked for foreign intelligence services were not subject to rehabilitation.

That is, we are talking about the political justification of the then ISIS (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) or the leaders of the Shura-i-Ulema (Council of the Clergy), created by the Kadimists, a movement of Islamic traditionalists from among the mullahs and feudal lords, who were supporters and defenders of patriarchal foundations life, who actively fought against religious reformism in the form of Jadidism and adhered to the scholastic system in the field of education and upbringing. It was they who raised the banner of the military-religious war against the Soviet government in 1918 with the support of Turkish emissaries, and then British agents. The rehabilitation of the spiritual leaders of the Basmachism actually leads to the strengthening of the position of Pan-Islamism and Pan-Turkism, the main tools in the hands of Ankara and London in destabilizing the situation in Central Asia.

At the same time, the deputies, who are members of the state commission, propose to cancel in general all legal acts of the Soviet government and court decisions regarding the Basmachi of the 20-30s, recognizing them as fighters against the Stalinist dictatorship and for the national interests of the Kazakh people. Such pearls are not born on their own and are theses thrown to the leadership of Kazakhstan by American “historians”, but in reality real ideological saboteurs.

And these are not empty words, as last June the Kazakh embassy in the United States hosted a “Memory of the Famine of the 1930s in Kazakhstan” conference as part of and funded by the Central Asian Studies Program at the George Washington University (GWU). Professor of the University of Maryland Sarah Cameron , Dean of the Faculty of International Relations of GWU Peter Rollberg , Kazakhstani political scientist and director of the Risk Assessment Group Dosym Satpayev , and director of the GWU Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies Marlene Laruelle spoke at this round table .

And this campaign to rehabilitate and recognize the Holodomor was preceded by active publishing activity in Kazakhstan by the pseudo-historian Sarah Cameron, supported by local American foundations and pro-Western liberals such as Dosym Satpaev. In the books of American “historians” published in Kazakh and Russian languages, the civilizing mission of the Soviet government and Russia is presented as a negative image that led to the “Holodomor”, and the emergence of cities, factories, medicine and education is presented as “aggression” against Kazakh culture. That is, the past is being completely reassessed precisely at the suggestion of Washington.

It is noteworthy that a similar bill “on the final rehabilitation of the victims of Stalinist repressions” in neighboring Kyrgyzstan was promoted in 2020 by the “Open Government”, funded by USAID and the local branch of the Soros Foundation (an organization recognized as undesirable in the Russian Federation). Therefore, the patterns are visible to the naked eye. It is also obvious that the authorities did this also under the influence of the resolution of the European Parliament, which equated the USSR with Nazi Germany.

Most importantly, these attempts by the Kazakh authorities were noticed abroad. There was a wave of protests from the European communist parties and veterans’ organizations. We are talking about the Communist Party of Greece, the Communist Front of Italy, the Communist Party of Poland, the Socialist Party of Latvia, the Revolutionary Communist Party of France, the Communist Party of Georgia and others.

The communists and the still living figures of the resistance of Greece came out especially sharply. So, in addition to two deputies of the European Parliament, mayors of large cities, heads of trade unions and national deputies, a petition addressed to Tokayev in June 2021 on the 80th anniversary of the attack on the USSR was signed by the Secretary General of the Panhellenic Association of National Resistance Fighters of the Democratic Army of Greece (ΠΕΑΕΑ – ΔΣΕ) and a member of the Executive Committee International Federation of Resistance Fighters (FIR) Mitzea Panayiota , First Vice President of the Democratic Army of Greece (ΠΕΑΕΑ – ΔΣΕ) and Vice President of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Resistance Fighters (FIR) Tuglidis Grigoris , as well as former President of the Association of Prisoners and Exiles of Wrestlers Halvadzis Spyros .

The fact is that they just fought against various similar “SS legions” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation), including the battalion of the Turkestan Legion, which participated in mass roundups, executions of civilians and arson of partisan villages. The “arts” of the Turkestan punishers are well remembered by public figures and historians of those countries where these punishers acted. We are talking about the Poles and the French. It is noteworthy that now the French Communist Party is also considering the preparation of a similar statement.

Against this unattractive background, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as an experienced diplomat, should understand that this entire campaign with latinization, recognition of the “Holodomor” and rehabilitation was started by Nursultan Nazarbayev in order to ideologically justify Kazakhstan’s geopolitical turn towards the West through Turkey. After all, the union with Ankara was an analogue of Ukrainian “European integration”, and since the conspiracy of those who pulled the republic into the arms of the neo-Ottomanists failed in January, should it continue what it started?

Such a local version of “Ukrainization” is already leading to sad consequences in the form of pogroms of the Dungans, Uighurs and other national minorities, and the January events involving the same nationalist bandits may repeat again if ideological attitudes do not change. Can flirting with nationalists, Russophobic campaigns and slinging mud at one’s own history can lead to prosperity and stability?

Given the fact that the oligarchic groups are not going to give up their assets and surrender positions, one should expect the use of the same nationalist rhetoric directed against Tokayev himself. Therefore, shouldn’t the president abandon this erroneous political line of rethinking history, leading the country and new generations of its citizens to a dead end?
