The caring for the class awareness of young workers has to go through the life and the activities of the union. To strengthen in the consciousness of the young people, the flame of organized response of the workers in every workplace against the whole of the bourgeoisie and their power. We need diverse, educative activity of the unions that draws, especially the young workers, in participation, in action, and relates with all aspects of their lives: the health and safety conditions, especially for young women workers, for young couples and even events about the history of the labor movement of an industry, events against drugs, film screenings, theater performances, parties, football tournaments etc.

O cuidado com a consciência de classe dos jovens trabalhadores tem de passar pela vida e pelas actividades do sindicato. É preciso fortalecer a consciência da juventude que é a chama da resposta organizada dos trabalhadores em todos os lugares de trabalho contra a burguesia inteira e o seu poder. Nós precisamos de actividades diversificadas e educativas que puxam os trabalhadores, especialmente os jovens, à participação, à acção e que se relacionam com todos os aspectos das suas vidas: as condições de saúde e segurança no trabalho, especialmente para as jovens mulheres trabalhadoras, para os jovens casais e eventos sobre a história do movimento operário de cada indústria, eventos contra as drogas, sessões de cinema, performances de teatro, festas, torneios de futebol, etc.

We need to restore the relationship of the young people with the unions, with the collective action, which has been fouled by the governmental and employers’ unionism. Young workers perceive
the union as something alien. We must restore trust in the union organization, which goes through the vanguard stance of militant workers in the workplace, transferring information -organizing the struggle in their workplace, with their irreconcilable struggle against the employers, their mechanisms, against the sold out unionists and the argument of “lesser evil”.

Nós precisamos de restaurar a relação da juventude com os sindicatos, com a acção colectiva, que tem sido manchada pelo sindicalismo patronal e governamental. Os jovens trabalhadores olham para o sindicato como um corpo estranho. Nós temos de restaurar a confiança na organização sindical e isso faz-se através da posição de vanguarda dos trabalhadores combativos (pela militância sindical) nos lugares de trabalho, transferindo informação e organizando a luta nos seus lugares de trabalho, através da luta irreconciliável contra os patrões, contra os seus mecanismo e contra os sindicalistas vendidos e contra o seu argumento do “mal menor”.

To increase the level of organization of young people in every workplace, the union needs specific and persistent plan involving the young people of the industry, the business, the school.
To take into account the complexity of this work, the conditions

of defeat in which grew and are now working, today’s youth. To take into account the influence of the new contracts of one daywork on the consciousness of the youth, the starvation-wages, the difficulties that face the young workers who bring up a young child, the apprenticeship contracts, the employment programs for short-fixed time, the permanent wandering of young people from unemployment to “black-labor”. At the same time, blackmails that take place within the workplace, the lack of class experience affect the consciousness of the young. Based on all these, they are reluctant to participate in the organization of the struggle in the workplace, in the union.

De forma a aumentar o nível de organização da juventude em todos os lugares de trabalho o sindicato precisa de planeamento específico e persistente envolvendo a juventude da indústria, da empresa e da escola. De forma a ter em conta a complexidade deste trabalho [sindical], é preciso ver as condições de derrota em que cresceram e agora estão a trabalhar, os jovens de hoje. É preciso ter em contra a influência dos novos contractos de um dia de trabalho na consciência da juventude e também os salários de fome, as dificuldades que enfrentam os jovens trabalhadores que educam uma criança, os contractos de estágio (“apprenticeship”, aprendizes), os programas de emprego de duração limitada e curta e a deriva permanente da juventude entre o desemprego e o “trabalho escravo”. Ao mesmo tempo, há chantagens que têm lugar dentro do lugar de trabalho e a falta de experiência de classe afecta a consciência dos jovens. Baseados em tudo isto, eles estão relutantes em participar na organização da luta do lugar de trabalho e no sindicato.

We must strengthen the planned intervention inside the technical schools. To make a list of professions, students. Nós temos de fortalecer a intervenção planeada dentro das escolas profissionais (technical schools). Temos de fazer uma lista de profissões e estudantes. Temos de planear as nossas acções não como uma acção de campanha isolada (uma só vez) mas de forma a compreender na prática como a intervenção nas escolas é um investimento para o futuro, para a ascenção dos operários industriais de amanhã e para a participação dos turnos do futuro nas lutas de massas. O Estado intervém de várias maneiras nas mentes das crianças pequenas. Uma quantidade de professores e directores de escolas nas escolas profissionais e nos estágios dão tais “lições sobre a obediência”. Eles cultivam nos estudantes a mentalidade “vocês são estudantes, não são trabalhadores, e então vocês não têm nada a ver com sindicatos”, “se vocês forem obedientes com as ordens dos patrões, eles vão contratar-vos depois do estágio”, “deviam ser vós a pagar ao vosso patrão porque vocês estão a ser educados e vocês são um custo para ele, portanto não lhe exijam salários”.

Essentially the function of the youth’s committees for some unions means shifting the responsibility to guide the working youth, towards them. First, it must be clarified that: The youth’s committee is not an organization within a union. In unions, where there is a reason to form such committee, it should take such initiatives, that will help the Union Board to broaden its work to the youth (and not to replace the responsibility of the board). At the same time, in unions where the overwhelming majority of their industry is young people, there is no need to set up committees.

Essencialmente a função dos comités da juventude para alguns sindicatos significam desviar a responsabilidade de guiar a juventude trabalhadora no sentido deles. Primeiro, tem de ser clarificado que: o comité da juventude não é uma organização dentro do sindicato. Nos sindicatos, onde exista razão para formar tal comité, este deve tomar iniciativas que irão ajudar a Direcção do Sindicato a alargar o seu trabalho com a juventude (e não substituir a responsabilidade da direcção por este trabalho). Ao mesmo tempo, nos sindicato onde a esmagadora maioria da sua indústria é gente jovem, não existe necessidade de criar os tais comités.

Committees must be close also to the Labor Centers.

Os comités têm de ser próximos também das Uniões Regionais de Sindicatos (Centros Operários).

The formation of youth committee does not solve the problem of orientation, if it does not become a matter of the whole Board, if there is no orientation in the industry’s youth, if it is not a subject for discussion at the general assemblies. The establishment of a youth committee without these terms means transferring of the responsibility and is doomed to failure. We have noticed several times that there is a lack in the content in the youth committees or the content of their activities does not embrace the problems and concerns of the working youth.

A formação do comité da juventude não resolve o problema da orientação, se este problema não se tornar assunto de toda a Direcção, se não existir orientação para a juventude da sua indústria, se não existir discussão deste tema nas assembleias gerais. Estabelecer o comité da juventude sem ser nestes termos significa transferir a responsabilidade e tal acção estará condenada ao fracasso. Nós temos notado várias vezes que existe uma falta de conteúdo no comité da juventude ou o conteúdo das suas actividades não abraça os problemas e preocupações da juventude trabalhadora.

It is required a courageous election of young workers as members in the Union Boards. To trust the militant young workers who are fighting in their workplace, who confront their employers. Do not delay the assignment of duties to young workers, using their inexperience as an excuse. It’s in the inside of the fire of class struggle where young workers are tested.

É necessária uma corajosa eleição de jovens trabalhadores como membros das Direcções dos Sindicatos. É necessário confiar nos jovens trabalhadores militantes combativos que estão a lutar nos seus lugares de trabalho, aqueles que confrontam os seus patrões. Não adiemos o confiar de tarefas aos jovens trabalhadores, usando a inexperiência como desculpa. É por dentro do fogo da luta de classes que os jovens trabalhadores são testados.

To take measures of creations and support of youth committees whose main task will be the assistance and evaluation of the Board. The committees respectively to help the discussion itself in the Board, to enrich the experience. The union must take initiatives for the working youth. To issue specific announcements, along with the general, if young people work or students do internships in a workplace. Nothing that has to do with problems of the working youth should leave the union untouched. To take initiatives in culture and sports that interests especially the young people.

É preciso tomar medidas para dar apoio aos comités da juventude, cuja principal tarefa será dar assistência e análise à Direcção. Os comités servem respectivamente para ajudar à própria discussão na Direcção e para enriquecer a sua experiência. O sindicato tem de tomar iniciativas para a juventude trabalhadora. Tem de divulgar comunicados específicos assim como gerais, a propósito dos jovens que trabalham ou do estudantes que fazem estágios (internship) num lugar de trabalho. Nada do que tem a ver com os problemas da juventude trabalhadora deve ser deixado sem intervenção do sindicato. Devemos tomar iniciativas na cultura e no desporto que interessam especialmente aos jovens.
